We're not just about drill, PT, community involvement and living the Army Values; we are also about family, friends, fellowship, and fun.
Check out what the newspapers have said about us: http://www.keepmecurrent.com/lakes_region_weekly/new-windham-cadet-platoon-established/article_d02c460a-2cae-11e5-815a-436a71ab30a7.html Here are just a few pictures of the many events our unit has enjoyed...rifle training, honoring our fallen heroes with the Summit Project, workouts at the gym, training by US Army drill sergeants, helping to tutor, teamwork, birthday parties, eating out, learning about how drugs can destroy lives, assisting with fire safety awareness, meeting new friends, attending hockey games, working on fitness, helping the Red Cross install smoke alarms, a fundraiser at Applebee's, PTSD seminar training, a patrol in the snows of December, PT tests, participating in honoring the Fallen, meals together, fire safety training, hanging with friends, playing games, promoting the program, a November drill, Veterans' Day Parade, Awards Night, clay shooting at L.L Bean, motivational PT, cadet camping night, shooting pool, enjoying pizza and cannoli at a cadet outing at St Peter's Italian Festival, preparing for patrol, Greek dancing, checking out humvees, pushing while on patrol, making dinner for cadet movie night and participating in the Ice Bucket Challenge during which nature provided a record torrential downpour. Our unit was founded only in April of 2014, yet cadets have enjoyed shooting at the range, high ropes courses, drill practice with the Maine State Select Honor Guard of the Maine Army National Guard, attending a drill day with the New Hampshire Army National Guard, drill and ceremony practice with members of the Maine Department of Corrections, and numerous high intensity PT sessions, ruck marches and simulated battle experiences where cadets put their skills of leadership, the Army Values, military training and critical thinking to good use. Cadets have also made their name know by providing community service. Cadets placed flags on the graves of service men and women in May, marched in the city's Memorial Day Parade, stood at attention to honor Vietnam veterans at the Vietnam Memorial Wall display, and did parking detail at the Greek Festival. The common questions; "Who are these polite young men...are they ROTC?". The answer - The Joint Military Cadets of America. |
Our unit represents the new face of America. Cadets are accepting of a wide variety of people. Membership ranges from cadets newly arrived from Europe, Africa and Asia (hence our information contacts below in French, Arabic, Somali, and Serbian) as well as native "Mainahs". Cadets may be found working out at the city's many outdoor recreational areas such as Back Cove, Stroudwater River Trail, and Fore River Estuary, marching city streets and nearby mountains, as well as attending classes and drill at our sponsor, the American Legion Post 17 and Windham High School In addition, cadets attend weekly drills on Mondays and Fridays as well as weekend drills once a month.
Cadets are authorized to wear the Army ACU, ASU and PT gear. Enrollment fees are reasonable and much less expensive than other programs such as soccer, football and the like. No cadet or adult cadre will be turned away due to economic challenges.
The training and the rewards you receive as a cadet or adult cadre are priceless. Our training is rigorous, focused, disciplined and "hooah". You will sweat, you will be pushed, you will be challenged...you will also laugh, grow, develop pride in yourself and others as well as reach goals you never thought to be achievable, all while honoring the proud history and traditions of the United States Army.
The unit will continue to be involved with community service, supporting our armed forces and veterans, as well as coordinating efforts with our brothers and sisters in other units of the Joint Military Cadets of America across the United States.
Feel free to stop by and observe us at any of our drills.
